A glow plug is similar in appearance to a spark plug and performs the same function in diesel rather than petrol engines. Once the glow plugs have been activated they generally take only two or three seconds to become sufficiently warm that the engine block will be in a condition whereby it is safe to start the engine. One of the main purposes of a set of glow plugs is to ensure that engine turns over and starts when it is cold due to low outside temperature.
